The leather couch creaks coolly along my back
A sound as soothing as the silent waves above me,
Trapped in the brush strokes of a seaman
Who has never left his shoreside.

The canvas I have brushed my growing fingers across
Is rough against my skin. The hard paint frozen
In whirls and drips of texture that mimic
The shifting of the ocean they contain.

I have seen that roiling ship a thousand times,
In a multitude of small moments of my glancing eye.
But even now my eye shifts lazily
Across the portrait, guided along

The curved arches of a sea bird's wings, to the
Moving sails and rope lines, taking in the

My hand's aching and music's buzzing softly in my ear.
The rumble of the neighbor's classroom is irritatingly near.

I want to leave so badly!
Headphones can't drown out
The unnerving quiet that prevades.
Silence too loud. I'll shout!

Legs? Take me out of here!
This desk is so depressing
And holding knowledge in my head's got me stressing.

Just that whisper rush of pencils
Papers shuffling and sliding
Across that plastic covered wood.
Two more hours? Time's hiding!

That creaking hinge's cryin'.
To the rest, it's a fireman's siren.
But me? That shrieking rusted wail is just taunting!

Sweet CoffeeSweet Coffee

You bought me a coffee in the Starbucks,
Insisted that No. Please, You'll Get This.
So I let you. After all,
Mother always taught me to respect the value
Of a Gentleman's genteel.

Our hands touched lightly around the cardboard sleeve.
It was awkward, a quick thing.
But strangely, I could still feel that tickle,
Far more than bumpy softness
Pressed under fingertips.

Is It Good? You asked me cautiously.
Silly, since I had ordered it. But you wondered
So I took a sip. Because
The aroma of caramel and cream
Was too important to ignore.

The white sweet froth on top, ah delicious!

Three Little DoggiesThree Little Doggies

Three little doggies jump a happy flip trick
(Without a one collar jingling a nick)
Whirl, Leap, Bark, Laugh
They dug their shouldn’ts, they rolled their shoulds

Ladies and Gents ( a large neighbor ball)
Cared for three doggies not at all
They yelled their mustn’ts, they pointed their zones
Cats, Mailmen, Children, Bones

The kiddies played (but no doggie knew
As down they chased and up they grew
Howl, Yip, Dance, Pounce)
That catchers were coming close by close.

Tail by nose and tag by feet
They ran their joy, they wept their grief
Tree by sign and legs by car
Three doggie spirits easy to harm

Wrong Side of the Tracks is an original comic and work in progress.

Synopsis:

It’s 2103. The world’s population of humans and animals dwindles, while plant life and ocean slowly give way to a spreading desert. Two of the last cities in New York are situated on either side of the last running American train tracks. Individuals populate the cities, not families, a process deemed more effective to restocking human life. Doctors test infants for any disability – everything from missing limbs to poor eyesight. Altus accepts only those that pass inspection, holding no found impairments.

This city, reminiscent of the country’s grandest hour, houses only the best individuals, giving them places to learn and mature. Those that fail grow up in Fallout, a slum city overpopulated and poor, where individuals cram within small houses and live a life of labor.

While far from a comfortable - even substandard - life, Fallout plays home to optimistic Felicia. She has dreams of a brighter future, though she has seen nothing to inspire them. Thus, she jumps at her class’s one chance to visit Altus, certain she can find a way to start changing her dreams into reality. She finds her guide in a young man named Kyle. Though a top student in Altus, daydreams fill his head and often leave him scolded for inattention.

The two, full of hopes and dreams, soon meet destiny head on – and each other, literally. After their sore and fateful encounter, the two break all the rules to keep meeting, determined to bring about much-needed change, heedless of the weight they pile on their shoulders. Plans are formed and alliances made as they pick their way through webs of lies. Immature Felicia grows up faster than she can keep up with, while insecure Kyle finds himself a leader in need of change within himself. Supported by eccentric inventor Cordell, nurturing mediator Jazlyn, calculating engineer Alan, and an army of friends, they discover secrets never meant to leave their dusty vaults. They forge their path and march on with a growing band of followers, determined to seize their shared vision of a brighter future.

But when it comes time for the ultimate sacrifice, who will lose the most, and will it be worth it?
